Mediumship Insights: Tips for Developing a Mediumship Ritual

I’ve come to understand the importance of having a ritual when connecting with Spirit. It’s setting the stage and letting Spirit know I’m ready to work with them.

My first class on spiritual development taught me how to ground, protect, and open myself when working intentionally. We were taught the significance of establishing boundaries and creating the right environment for Spirit to communicate with us.

Unfortunately, I’ve found that this practice is often overlooked in classes and workshops I’ve attended in recent years, especially when there are people with varying levels of experience.

This became especially clear during a three-day mediumship workshop I attended recently. It wasn’t until the last day that we were encouraged to take a few minutes to relax, ground, protect, and open ourselves up before beginning the readings. The difference in the quality of the readings was noticeable. While correlation doesn’t imply causation, I do think the ritual helped.

With that in mind, I’d like to share my ritual with you.

Grounding

This action connects you with earth energy and keeps you grounded and stable.

Action: Visualise cords or tree roots from your feet or root chakra into the earth’s core. Alternatively, imagine you are hugging a large tree. Sometimes, you may feel a tug from the cords, confirming you are grounded (although this is not mandatory).

If I connect to Spirit without grounding, my energy begins to spin, everything shifts to the right, and it feels like a wall of energy is rushing to meet me.

Your Aura and Your Chakras by Karla McLaren has some brilliant tips on grounding effectively and checking in with your energy centres.

Protection

A teacher once told me that asking for protection means that you’re working from a place of fear. I disagree.

When I open up, I see it as me opening a door and shining a light that says “open for business”, and just like a shop, you can’t always control who comes in.

Action: Imagine yourself surrounded by white or gold light, and ask your Spirit team to only allow in energies for your highest good.

Over the years, I’ve learnt that my bubble of protection changes according to what I need. It may be a different colour, or I get a house or a cloak instead of a bubble. I don’t judge, I trust that my Spirit team know what is right for me.

Opening

Working with Spirit without opening my chakras means the lines of communication aren’t as clear as they can be. I still get messages, but it takes a lot more work.

Action: Open each chakra from the root to the crown. You can imagine each one as flowers blooming, lift doors opening, or light bulbs being switched on. Once they are all open, imagine a white light running from the earth’s core through each charka out of your crown into the sky.

Say “hello” to your Gatekeeper and Mediumship Guides.

At this point, the energy around you changes as Spirit move closer.

Set an intention

You’re grounded, protected and open; now, set an intention for your work.

Action: Tell your Guides what you want from the session, for example: “Please bring forward someone the sitter will recognise and or let the messages be for their highest good.”

It will change depending on the purpose of the session.

Give thanks

When the reading is over, I thank all the energies who worked with and helped me during the session. I may even do a few mental high-fives. They may not give me a high-five me, but I hope it makes them smile.

Action: Thank the Spirits that have come forward and your Guides for working with you.

Closing

After the “thank yous” and “goodbyes”, I close out.

Action: (1) Close your charkas; this is the reverse action of opening. Imagine each charka closing, if you used lift doors, imagine them closing, likewise for flowers. (2) Ask your Spirit team to surround you with a new bubble of protection.

This signifies to the Spirit world that I’ve finished working and am closed for the day.

I follow a ritual for several reasons:

  1. It helps me focus
  2. Signals to my Guides and the Spirit world that I’m ready to work with them
  3. It helps me give a vibrant reading

Like anything, this works for me, and you may have your process when working with Spirit. There is no wrong or right way; it’s about what works for you and your team.

It can take 1 minute or 10; the length isn’t significant, it’s about setting the stage.

This won’t stop Spirits from contacting you outside of your sessions because they will let you know if they have something to say!
