Your Spiritual Gifts Are Unique To You
The tutor had asked the class to bring in an item so we could practice psychometry.
“Claire”, a student, dug into her bag and pulled out a horseshoe.
She explained that when she and her family moved onto their farm, during the renovations they found a few horseshoes buried on the grounds.
As she held the once-buried symbol of luck in her hand, two things happened at once.
The air grew heavy, and a male energy appeared and began running in a circle.
I looked around to see if anyone else spotted it. All the while trying not to make eye contact with the sprinting spirit, but it seemed only I had noticed.
The tutor asked Claire to pass the object around the circle. I watched closely to see if anyone reacted. Still nothing.
When it came to my turn, I politely declined, and it kept going until someone else, “Sarah”, also refused to touch it. An uneasy but knowing look passed between us.
The male figure kept sprinting around the room. When I dared to glance in his direction, I saw he wore a long black leather apron. I was confused then, but I now realise he was a blacksmith.
At the end of the exercise, the teacher asked for our opinions.
I explained that it was buried for a reason and that she should probably put it back. I didn’t want to scare her by saying it had been buried for protection and that a negative spirit was attached to it; a spirit that was now in the room with us. No one wants to hear that at 8 pm on an autumnal Wednesday evening.
Sarah also spoke up, but with a bit more honesty than me. She told Claire it had dark energy and that a man in the room was attached to it. This gave me the confidence that what I saw and felt was real.
The point of the story above isn’t about a cursed horseshoe. It’s that, even though everyone in that room was a medium, most didn’t pick up on the energy or attachment, because our gifts are unique to us and our lived experiences.
We’ve all, no doubt, had moments where we can’t pick up on something no one else can see.
Your gift is uniquely yours: own it
The older I get, and the more I learn about life, the more I understand that I must learn to trust my intuition.
I once met a medium who got messages from elementals and nature . She channelled the plant in my front room. That is not the usual format mediumship takes; it’s usually a human (mom, dad, a grandparent or two, etc.), but here she was channelling my plant. After the reading, I remember thinking she must be grounded in her abilities, because, let’s be honest, if I were giving a reading and a plant came through, I would immediately think something had gone terribly wrong.
In another class, a teacher told a student whose guide was a tree spirit that she was only allowed to communicate with human spirits whilst in the class. Elementals have been here longer than people; it makes perfect sense that they’re guides. Also, in many cultures, communicating with elementals is a common practice.
The point I’m trying to make is that your lived experience shapes your mediumship.
Embracing Change and Trusting the Journey
However, what the Universe chooses to communicate with you is personal.
Your gifts may also change as you get older; it could be significant change or something a bit more subtle.
For me, the significant change, one I didn’t expect or even think was possible, is that I can now pick up on planetary energies. The first energy I picked up was Venus. Now, I should explain, I know my star sign, but that was as far as I’d go. The next one was Mars; he had a strong, determined energy behind it. This new development has been amazing and does make me chuckle. If someone had told me ten years ago, I’d be picking up planets, I would have laughed at them and walked away, but there you go.
My tips for trusting your journey:
1) Trust yourself and your intuition: just because someone else can’t see or feel it doesn’t mean it’s not correct. Ask your team for proof, objective evidence, that your intuition is correct. My guides usually give an obscure image, word, or date, or something I have to check to see if it’s correct.
2) Intentional practice: it doesn’t have to be elaborate, but maybe a 5-10 minute meditation; ask your guides for help.
3) Get to know yourself: And I mean all of you, the good, the bad and the ugly. As I mentioned, I get visits from neutral energies, and they’ve helped me understand the world better. I know that I am generally relaxed about things, so I was comfortable engaging with the in-betweens (with the necessary boundaries).
4) Your spiritual growth will not look like others: It’s a cliché, but don’t, or at least try not to, compare yourself to others. This is your journey.
5) Things may happen out of sync: Have you ever had an urge to buy a book, so you do, but you just can’t get into it, so it stays on your bookshelf gathering dust, then years later, you get the urge to read it, and it makes sense in a way it wouldn’t have at the time of purchase? Yeah, I’ve found spiritualism is a bit like that.
Be patient and kind with yourself. I’d describe this gift as being on a bus driven by my guides, and only they know the destinations; my part as the passenger is to get off at the stops, pick something up from the shops, get back on, and keep going until it reaches its destination. And if you’re lost, they are waiting for you to find your way back to the bus stop.
So grab some snacks and enjoy the ride.
