What You Need to Know Before Your First Mediumship Reading
Congratulations! You’ve done your research, found a Medium you like, and booked an appointment. The day of the reading might leave you feeling a mix of emotions, from nervousness and excitement to some healthy scepticism. But don’t worry; you’re not alone.
As someone who has seen many Mediums, I can tell you that, like with any profession, some are good, and some could be better. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to receive vague messages or, in some cases, to unwittingly give the Medium information without realising it.
But here’s the good news: the purpose of a reading is for the Medium to provide evidence that they are communicating with Spirit and proof of life. With this in mind, I’ve got some great tips on what you can expect from a reading.
Keep to “yes” and “no” answers
All Mediums work differently. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen Mediums say to clients, “Who’s the woman in spirit?” or “Is father in spirit?”.
Nope.
The Medium should know who they’ve got. They may need to work harder to get the information, but it is up to someone other than you to provide it. For example, my mother and grandmother come through as very similar energies, so the Medium often has to give a physical description or personality traits before I can confirm who it is. This is perfectly okay.
When I’m giving a reading, I tell the client the following:
- Give me yes or no answers only
- Don’t elaborate. It’s my role to provide you with the information, not vice versa
- If I’m wrong, tell me; I can then take it back to Spirit and ask them to clarify
When I’ve finished, I might ask for clarification on something I saw or felt, partly because I am nosy and also because that is now in my internal library, so if it comes up again, I know what it means.
We can’t control who comes through
Go in with an open mind. As Mediums, we generally don’t know who will come through. We can ask for a specific person, but Spirit knows who you need to hear from.
I’ve been guilty of this as a client – I want to hear from X, but maybe X knows I’m not ready to hear from them yet.
The problem is, if you are fixated on a particular energy coming through, any evidence the Medium gives will be deemed incorrect because it doesn’t fit the person in your mind. Over the years, I’ve realised the right people will come through at the right time.
Sometimes, we get nothing
So the Medium sits down, opens up, and checks in with their Guide… and nothing…not a peep.
This happens, and it could be for several reasons: someone is unwell, the energies are mismatched, or it’s just not supposed to happen.
Whilst this is disappointing for all involved, the Medium should let you know what is happening, and they may either offer a refund or provide a psychic reading instead (everyone has their own rule on this).
The first time this happened during a reading, I was mortified. Interestingly, when the client walked through the door, I heard my Guides say “No”, and the connection dropped. I wasn’t meant to give this person a reading for whatever reason. The client sat down, and I didn’t get a thing, and I told her. She wasn’t happy, but I explained the situation. If I tried to force it, it would’ve been embarrassing and painful for everyone involved.
Relax
As a client, all you need to do is relax, allow, and give confirmation. And if possible, to enjoy the session.

Each Medium has their unique style, but the ultimate goal remains the same: to provide you with proof of life beyond this world.
So, as you prepare for your reading, keep an open heart and mind; you might receive the messages and connections you seek. Enjoy the session, and may it bring you the comfort and insights you’re searching for on your spiritual journey.
